| A high density power unit (HDPU) for
house ware appliance applications based on PEM air breathing fuel cell technology
and metal hydride gas storage is proposed. The technology and expertise
exist to build small lightweight PEM fuel cell systems to produce typical
120 V @ 15 amps or more current to power 2,000 watt applications at a minimum
of 10 hours (continuous). Fuel storage is based on a package of two canisters
approximately shaped and sized as a typical 9 volt battery format for a
ten hour run time at 2,000 Watts. Each canister is re-chargeable and recyclable
for safe, low cost power. The present prototype form demonstrates 2,000 watts capability in a package size approximately 3 x 3 x 3.75 inches built from Mica laminations and stainless steel. The possibilities of small lightweight power units for a wide variety of useful products are achievable in molded plastic units specifically designed for house ware applications.
